WHO'S FUELING THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WORK?

Could Four Nutritional Power Players Be the Energy Starters Your Metabolism Has Been Missing?

By Shawnte “Health” Wells | The Wells of Wellness

Ladies, who's taking care of the woman who's taking care of EVERYTHING?

You can run a business, manage a household, lead a team, handle deadlines, juggle responsibilities, and show up for everyone who needs you.

But here's a question worth asking:

Are you investing as intentionally in your metabolic health as you are in everything else you're building?

That was the heart of my recent guest presentation with RESET: Women's Collective, where we explored an essential conversation for women navigating the next chapter of life.

Our theme was THE POWER RESET: FUEL THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WORK.

And we didn't spend our time chasing another miracle supplement or promising overnight transformations.

We talked about something far more practical.

Four nutritional power players that deserve a starting position in your wellness strategy:

POMEGRANATE. WALNUTS. BEETS. BERRIES.

Four everyday foods. Different nutritional assignments. One common purpose: helping us build a better foundation for circulation, cardiovascular wellness, metabolic health, and the body's everyday energy demands.

But before introducing these foods, I had a question for the ladies.

THE 2 P.M. ENERGY CHECK: WHAT'S YOUR NEXT MOVE?

Picture this.

It's 2 p.m.

Your morning momentum has faded, the emails keep coming, the to-do list is still growing, and suddenly your energy seems to be negotiating its departure!

What do you do?

A. Reach for another cup of coffee.

B. Push through because there's still work to do.

C. Look for something to eat.

D. Pause, recharge, and give your body a moment to recover.

This question opened an interesting conversation.

One participant from Texas shared that she intentionally takes time around 2 or 2:30 p.m. to pray and rest. That pause helps her navigate the afternoon without feeling so depleted.

Another participant acknowledged her relationship with coffee while recognizing the value of a restorative pause.

That exchange brought us to one of the most important lessons of the session:

Sometimes your next energy strategy isn't another stimulant. It's recognizing what your body actually needs.

Maybe it's food. Maybe it's water. Maybe it's movement, better sleep, or simply a moment to recover.

A caffeine cutoff around 2 p.m. can be a useful personal rule, especially for someone whose sleep is affected by afternoon coffee. The ideal cutoff depends on bedtime and individual sensitivity.

And ladies, we cannot discuss sustainable energy without discussing metabolism.

YOUR METABOLISM IS MORE THAN A NUMBER ON THE SCALE

One of the first things I challenged during the presentation was the idea that metabolic health is simply about how much somebody weighs.

It isn't.

Metabolism includes the many processes your body uses to convert and manage energy, regulate blood glucose, and maintain essential functions.

We also discussed the concept of metabolically healthy obesity, which helps illustrate why body size alone does not tell us everything about a person's current metabolic measurements.

However, that label does not mean excess body fat carries no long-term health risks.

And someone who appears slim can still have concerning amounts of visceral fat, the fat stored around internal organs.

The real conversation is bigger than being skinny. It's about being metabolically well.

That includes healthy blood pressure, blood sugar regulation, cardiovascular function, muscle health, and sustainable daily habits.

I also introduced adiponectin, a hormone produced by fat tissue that plays a role in metabolic regulation and insulin sensitivity.

Why does this matter?

Because when we understand that our metabolism involves communication between tissues, hormones, and organs, we begin to see food differently.

Not just as calories.

As nourishment that helps support an entire energy ecosystem.

And that brings us to our starting four!

ENERGY STARTER #1: POMEGRANATE, THE CIRCULATION PLAYMAKER

❤️Position: Vascular wellness support

Pomegranate is one of those beautiful foods that looks luxurious while bringing some serious nutritional value to the table.

Its deep ruby-red seeds contain polyphenols, including compounds with antioxidant activity.

In our conversation, I explained why pomegranate has caught attention in cardiovascular research and sports nutrition.

Certain studies suggest that pomegranate consumption may have favorable effects on blood pressure, although more research is needed to understand its full clinical impact.

I also shared how pomegranate juice has been explored in athletic fueling and workout-related nutrition.

But here's the distinction: drinking pomegranate juice is not a shortcut to muscle development. Training, total nutrition, protein intake, and recovery remain essential.

Your practical Power Reset: Add pomegranate seeds to Greek yogurt, oatmeal, or a colorful salad. If choosing juice, read the ingredients and look for 100% juice without added sugar.

It does not have to be an everyday ritual. Rotating it into your weekly nutrition is a reasonable starting point.

Power thought: Support the circulation system that helps deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout your body.

ENERGY STARTER #2: WALNUTS, THE SMART NUTRITIONAL INVESTMENT

🌰Position: Healthy fats and metabolic nourishment

Let's talk about a food that doesn't require an expensive wellness subscription, fancy preparation, or extra time in the kitchen.

Walnuts!

One of the standout nutritional characteristics of walnuts is their alpha-linolenic acid, better known as ALA, a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid.

The body can convert some ALA into EPA and DHA, although that conversion is limited. ALA still contributes to a nutritious eating pattern.

During my presentation, I connected walnuts to the larger discussion of adiponectin, healthy fat metabolism, and cardiovascular function.

The important takeaway is that walnuts provide beneficial fats and nutrients, but they are not guaranteed to raise adiponectin or reverse metabolic disease on their own.

Their value comes from being part of an overall healthy eating pattern.

Your practical Power Reset:

  • Pair walnuts with Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or kefir.

  • Sprinkle chopped walnuts over berries.

  • Keep a small portion available for a convenient workday snack.

  • Have difficulty chewing nuts? Grind them into smaller pieces and mix them into softer foods.

That last tip is especially useful for women with dental sensitivity who still want to enjoy their nutritional benefits.

Power thought: A small nutritional investment can be an easy, repeatable part of your wellness portfolio.

ENERGY STARTER #3: BEETS, THE BLOOD-FLOW STRATEGIST

❤️Position: Nitric oxide and exercise support

Now, this is where my sports medicine background enters the conversation!

When I talk about beets, I want you to understand one important concept.

FLOW.

Beets contain dietary nitrates, which the body can convert through a series of processes into nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide helps regulate blood-vessel function and relaxation.

Think of your cardiovascular system as a transportation network.

Your heart pumps blood. Your blood carries oxygen and nutrients. Your muscles depend on an adequate supply to perform their work.

Nitric oxide plays a role in helping regulate those vascular pathways.

Research suggests that beetroot juice can improve certain measures of exercise efficiency or endurance in some people, although results vary.

During our session, I explained why beetroot has become such an interesting conversation in sports nutrition.

And I admitted something about myself.

Whole beets are not my favorite thing to eat!

But that doesn't mean I overlook their nutritional value.

Beet juice, roasted beets, and beet greens provide different ways to work this food into a healthy dietary pattern.

Your practical Power Reset: Add roasted beets to your salad, experiment with beet greens, or try an appropriate portion of beetroot juice as part of a balanced nutrition plan.

Power thought: Before demanding more performance from your body, support the systems that make performance possible.

ENERGY STARTER #4: BERRIES, THE COLORFUL CELLULAR ALLIES

🫐Position: Fiber, polyphenols, and antioxidant-rich nutrition

Ladies, color matters!

And I'm not just talking about your wardrobe.

I'm talking about the color on your plate.

Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and other deeply colored berries offer fiber and naturally occurring plant compounds.

Among those compounds are anthocyanins, which contribute to the beautiful red, blue, and purple colors of many berries.

Researchers continue to investigate how anthocyanin-rich foods relate to cardiovascular and metabolic health.

During the RESET discussion, I highlighted several favorites, including blueberries, blackberries, and goldenberries.

We also talked about being intentional when shopping.

My food-first preference is to make fresh and unsweetened frozen berries convenient staples whenever possible.

Frozen fruit can be economical, practical, and nutritious.

Canned fruit can also be a healthy option when packed in water or 100% juice rather than heavy syrup. The important distinction is the ingredient list, not simply whether a food comes in a can.

Your practical Power Reset: Add berries to breakfast, Greek yogurt, smoothies, or a protein-rich afternoon snack.

Power thought: Sometimes supporting your health starts by bringing more color and variety to the foods you already enjoy.

THE REAL POWER MOVE: PUT YOUR STARTING FOUR TO WORK

Now, I know what some of you are thinking.

"Health, this sounds wonderful, but I have meetings, family responsibilities, travel, and about seventeen things competing for my attention before lunch!"

I understand.

And that's exactly why my approach is built around real life.

You don't need four elaborate recipes or a complete kitchen makeover.

Imagine this:

Breakfast: Plain Greek yogurt topped with blueberries, walnuts, and pomegranate seeds.

Lunch: A colorful salad with leafy greens, protein, roasted beets, and extra-virgin olive oil.

Afternoon: A short reset break. Drink some water, take a gentle walk, stretch, or allow yourself a few moments of quiet before deciding whether you need a snack.

Simple? Yes.

Intentional? Absolutely.

Guaranteed to eliminate fatigue? No.

But these are practical ways to make nutrient-dense foods and restorative routines part of a demanding life.

That's what I call building wellness you can actually live with.

THE 48-HOUR POWER RESET CHALLENGE

Before you close this article, I want you to take the same spirit of action we brought to RESET: Women's Collective and apply it to your own life.

Ask yourself three questions:

1. What's draining my energy most consistently?

Could it be inadequate sleep, irregular meals, too much caffeine, too little recovery, or a demanding schedule that rarely slows down?

2. Which Energy Starter deserves a position in my nutritional lineup?

Will you choose pomegranate, walnuts, beets, or berries?

3. What's one action I can repeat within the next 48 hours?

Not five new routines.

Not a twelve-step transformation.

One intentional move.

Start there.

And if your fatigue is persistent, severe, or unexplained, don't assume it's simply a nutrition or motivation issue. A healthcare professional can help investigate other possible causes.

LADIES, YOUR NEXT CHAPTER DESERVES MORE THAN LEFTOVER ENERGY!

Here's what I want every woman reading this to remember.

You've spent years building careers, nurturing families, leading organizations, managing responsibilities, and helping other people move forward.

But the woman doing all that work deserves to be supported, too.

Not only when she reaches exhaustion.

Not only when the scale changes.

Not only when someone else gives her permission to slow down.

NOW.

Pomegranate, walnuts, beets, and berries may look like ordinary groceries.

But when we understand the nutrients they contribute and the body systems they help support, ordinary foods become opportunities to make more intentional choices.

Your metabolism isn't just something to criticize when your weight isn't changing.

It's an essential part of the body you live, work, move, think, love, and serve in every day.

And that body deserves care.

Remember this:

"YOUR GREATEST PROFESSIONAL ASSET IS THE WOMAN WHO SHOWS UP TO DO THE WORK. FUEL HER ACCORDINGLY!"

Thank you to RESET: Women's Collective for creating space for this important conversation about the relationship between nourishment, energy, and the women behind the work.

Let's keep building stronger bodies, healthier habits, and more sustainable lives.
