Running on empty BUT still demanding more?

THE VALINE LESSON AT THE WELL

What John 4, an essential amino acid, and three intentional habits can teach us about nourishing the body, restoring our strength, and living well.

HOW MUCH HAVE YOU ALREADY DEMANDED FROM YOUR BODY TODAY?

Get up. Get moving. Meet the deadline. Manage the stress. Take care of everybody else. Push through the fatigue. Find more energy. Produce more results.

Now here's my question.

WHAT HAVE YOU GIVEN YOUR BODY TO WORK WITH?

Because some of us are expecting championship-level performance while providing barely enough nourishment and recovery to get through the day!

And before you reach for another energy drink, supplement, or motivational video, I want you to consider something.

What if your next breakthrough isn't about doing MORE, but understanding what you're missing?

That's where Episode 2 of The Meeting Well Show took us.

We brought together an unexpected combination: Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4, an essential amino acid called valine, and a conversation about the importance of being honest about our physical and spiritual needs.

And what unfolded was about far more than nutrition.

SHE CAME FOR WATER. JESUS REVEALED A DEEPER NEED.

In John 4, we find Jesus sitting beside Jacob's well, tired from His journey.

Now don't overlook that detail.

JESUS WAS TIRED.

He had been traveling. He needed rest. And He wasn't pretending otherwise.

For those of us who pride ourselves on being dependable, productive, and available to everybody, that observation deserves some attention.

Somewhere along the way, many of us started treating exhaustion like an achievement.

We applaud the person who never stops. We celebrate the one who never says no. We admire the professional who operates on four hours of sleep and still shows up smiling.

But being able to push through doesn't always mean you should.

When the Samaritan woman arrived, she expected an ordinary encounter involving ordinary water.

Instead, Jesus introduced her to the idea of living water, something that addressed a spiritual thirst no physical well could satisfy.

That is the spiritual message of the passage. But it also inspired an important wellness question during our show.

Are you recognizing what you truly need, or are you merely managing the symptoms of what you've been neglecting?

You can eat and still have gaps in your nutrition.

You can exercise and still neglect recovery.

You can be surrounded by people and still need spiritual renewal.

And you can be incredibly productive while quietly running yourself into the ground.

The first step toward change is being honest enough to recognize the difference.

MEET VALINE: THE ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT THAT DOESN'T NEED THE SPOTLIGHT

Let's bring the science into the conversation.

Valine is one of nine essential amino acids. That means your body cannot manufacture it, so you must obtain it through your diet.

It belongs to the branched-chain amino acid family, commonly called BCAAs.

Meet the trio:

LEUCINE. ISOLEUCINE. VALINE.

These amino acids contribute to protein metabolism and the maintenance of muscle tissue.

Valine is involved in protein synthesis and can also be used in energy metabolism.

Why does this matter?

Because your muscles do more than move your body.

They help you perform everyday tasks, maintain physical independence, support movement, and participate in the metabolic processes that keep you functioning.

And as we age, protecting muscle becomes increasingly important.

Especially for adults over 40, we cannot afford to think of muscle as something that matters only to athletes or bodybuilders.

YOUR MUSCLES ARE PART OF YOUR LONGEVITY STRATEGY!

But here's where people sometimes get distracted.

They learn about a nutrient, immediately search for a supplement, and overlook the foods that can provide it alongside other essential nutrients.

That's not the approach I emphasized during our show.

DON'T GO CHASING VALINE IN A BOTTLE. START WITH YOUR PLATE!

Your body requires all nine essential amino acids to build its proteins effectively.

Valine is important, but taking isolated valine is not a substitute for getting adequate, well-balanced dietary protein.

So instead of asking which expensive product you need to buy, let's start with a better question.

WHAT'S ALREADY AVAILABLE IN YOUR KITCHEN?

Here are familiar foods that supply valine:

  • Eggs and Greek yogurt: Convenient breakfast proteins.

  • Salmon and tuna: Protein-rich seafood options.

  • Tofu and tempeh: Versatile plant-based protein sources.

  • Lentils and edamame: Foods that bring protein and fiber to the table.

  • Almonds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flaxseeds: Useful additions to meals and snacks.

The objective isn't to obsess over one amino acid or achieve perfection with every plate.

It's to build an overall eating pattern that supplies adequate protein, a variety of whole foods, and the nutrients your body needs.

Here's a simple strategy you can start tomorrow.

At breakfast, add eggs or Greek yogurt.

At lunch, build your meal around salmon, chicken, tofu, or another meaningful protein source.

At dinner, don't let protein become an afterthought. Include beans, lentils, tempeh, seafood, poultry, or another option that fits your preferences.

You don't need to make nutrition unnecessarily complicated.

CONSISTENCY WILL TAKE YOU FURTHER THAN CONSTANTLY CHASING THE NEXT WELLNESS TREND.

And remember, low energy can have many causes. Valine isn't a magic switch for fatigue or metabolism. It's one necessary part of a much larger nutritional picture.

SOMETIMES YOUR BIGGEST WELLNESS WIN IS THE WORD "NO"

One of my favorite moments from Episode 2 happened during our Well Gratitude segment.

We weren't just celebrating pounds lost, workouts completed, or numbers on a scale.

We celebrated decisions.

Ramon shared how he recognized that an event he was attending no longer aligned with what he needed. Instead of staying because of expectations and appearances, he made the decision to leave and return home.

That's a wellness win!

Not because everyone should walk away from an obligation, but because learning to recognize your limits matters.

Then Patty shared how she had begun incorporating strength training into her workday.

Nothing elaborate. No massive gym setup.

She started with approximately 10 minutes, then progressed to 15 minutes.

She was working with the time, space, and resources she had available.

THAT'S WHAT I CALL PUTTING YOUR HEALTH TO WORK IN REAL LIFE!

Another participant, Maria, reflected on progress that went beyond chasing a particular number on the scale. Her experience highlighted the value of recognizing sustainable changes and sharing useful wellness knowledge with others.

Different stories. Different circumstances.

But one common thread.

WELLNESS BEGINS WHEN YOU STOP MEASURING YOURSELF ONLY BY WHAT YOU PRODUCE AND START PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU NEED.

ARE YOUR HABITS HELPING YOU DRAW OR CAUSING YOU TO DRAIN?

During the show, we played a game called DRAIN OR DRAW.

The premise was simple.

Some choices support your health. Others repeatedly pull from your resources without providing the nourishment or recovery you need.

Eating protein-rich meals regularly? DRAW.

Choosing balanced meals with protein, fiber, and whole foods? DRAW.

Replacing adequate nutrition with an isolated valine supplement? DRAIN.

Depending on caffeine while consistently neglecting recovery? DRAIN.

Making room for nourishment, movement, prayer, and rest? DRAW.

Our participants got all five scenarios right!

But knowing the answers and practicing them consistently are two different things.

That's where metabolic literacy comes in.

I want people to understand more than a list of health rules.

I want them to recognize their patterns, understand their bodies, know which measurements matter, and make informed adjustments.

Because HEALTH KNOWLEDGE IS MOST POWERFUL WHEN IT BECOMES REAL-LIFE ACTION.

RECOVERY ISN'T QUITTING. IT'S PART OF THE PROCESS.

We also discussed a mistake that can interfere with progress, particularly when people are starting or restarting an exercise routine.

They interpret every uncomfortable sensation as a signal to stop, or they ignore pain entirely because they believe pushing harder means getting stronger.

Neither extreme is helpful.

Mild muscle soreness after unfamiliar exercise can be normal. Gentle movement may feel helpful.

But sharp, worsening, or significant pain is not something to push through. And anyone recovering from surgery should follow their healthcare team's activity instructions.

Recovery deserves the same attention we give exercise.

Your body needs sufficient sleep, appropriate activity, nutrition, and time to adapt.

YOU DON'T BUILD A STRONGER BODY BY CONSTANTLY DEMANDING MORE WITHOUT ALLOWING IT TO RECOVER.

Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is respect your body's need for rest.

Sound familiar?

Remember how we started with Jesus sitting beside the well, tired from His journey?

The lesson is worth revisiting.

REST ISN'T A CHARACTER FLAW.

THE 3-DAY MEETING WELL CHALLENGE: NOURISH. MOVE. REFLECT.

Knowledge without action is just another interesting conversation.

So I challenged our audience to make three small commitments.

Nothing extreme. Nothing requiring a brand-new wardrobe, expensive equipment, or an elaborate schedule.

DAY 1: NOURISH

Include a meaningful protein source in your meals.

Look at what's on your plate. Identify one easy improvement.

Perhaps you add Greek yogurt at breakfast, edamame to lunch, or a portion of fish or tofu at dinner.

Start where you are.

DAY 2: MOVE

Take a 10-minute walk or complete a short movement snack appropriate for your ability.

Movement doesn't have to happen inside a gym.

You can stand up between meetings, walk during a break, or do a brief strength routine in a small space.

Small actions still count.

DAY 3: REFLECT

Spend time in prayer, quiet reflection, or an honest assessment of your habits.

Ask yourself:

What am I repeatedly asking my body to do?

Am I giving myself enough opportunity to recover?

Where do I need healthier boundaries?

What is one behavior I can sustain instead of another temporary promise?

During the episode, we practiced a simple breath prayer.

Take a comfortable breath in and out.

Then gently touch each fingertip to your thumb, one after another, as you repeat:

"PEACE BEGINS WITH ME."

Repeat the phrase slowly several times.

It's a simple way to pair mindful attention, gentle hand movement, and a meaningful affirmation. You can practice it before a stressful meeting, during a quiet moment, or while resetting your focus.

The value isn't in making the exercise mysterious.

It's in giving yourself permission to become present and intentional.

SHE LEFT HER WATER JAR. WHAT ARE YOU READY TO LEAVE BEHIND?

There's another moment in John 4 that deserves our attention.

After her encounter with Jesus, the Samaritan woman left her water jar and went to tell others about what had happened.

She didn't keep the experience to herself.

Now I have a question for you.

WHAT WOULD CHANGE IF YOU STOPPED KEEPING EVERY LESSON ABOUT YOUR HEALTH TO YOURSELF?

What if the simple movement strategy that helped you also encouraged a coworker?

What if your decision to establish better boundaries gave a friend permission to do the same?

What if learning how to build balanced meals helped your household make more informed choices?

Wellness isn't meant to become another competition over who's doing everything perfectly.

It's an opportunity to strengthen ourselves and share what we've learned.

That was part of our closing challenge during Episode 2.

LEARN SOMETHING. APPLY SOMETHING. SHARE SOMETHING.

And keep growing.

WELCOME TO WELL NATION: WHERE CONSISTENCY BECOMES A COMMUNITY PRACTICE

Now here's where I want to take this conversation beyond one episode, one article, or one good intention.

Because I know what happens.

You hear something helpful. You get motivated. You make a plan.

Then life starts doing what life does!

The meetings pile up. Your schedule changes. Family responsibilities increase. That routine you were excited about suddenly gets pushed aside.

And before long, you find yourself starting over.

THE FINAL WORD

The Samaritan woman arrived looking for water.

Her encounter with Jesus pointed toward something deeper.

And while valine cannot answer a spiritual need, learning about this essential nutrient reminds us that our physical bodies have real requirements we cannot simply wish away.

We need nourishment.

We need movement.

We need recovery.

We need honesty about our limits.

And for those of us who draw strength from faith, we need spiritual renewal, too.

So the next time you're tempted to demand more from yourself, ask a different question first.

AM I PROVIDING WHAT I NEED TO LIVE LONG, STRONG, AND WELL?

Don't just push harder.

NOURISH BETTER. MOVE INTENTIONALLY. RECOVER PURPOSEFULLY.

And whatever you do, don't neglect the person carrying your purpose.
